Excellency:

I am in receipt of your letter dated August 25, 1995 in which you request that a report be forwarded to your Committee on the progress the inter-American Economic and Social Council (CIES) has made in implementing the Summit of the Americas Initiatives and its additional plans to follow up on the Summit action plans.

I am pleased to inform you that CIES, through its Permanent Executive Committee, has been actively working on the relevant provisions of General Assembly mandates and Summit of the Americas Initiatives that have a bearing on technical cooperation reform in the Economic and Social area.

Taking into account the Protocol of Managua and the results of the Special Session of the General Assembly on Cooperation for Development that took place in Mexico in February of 1994, the CEPCIES/CEPCIECC Joint Working Group on the Transition to CIDI has reinitiated its activities, In compliance with resolutions AG/RES, 1314 (XXV-0/95) "Inter-American, Cooperation for Integral Development and AG/RES. 1354 CXXV-0/95) "Partnership for Development and Elimination of Poverty" it has approved a working document on the "Transition Process for the Implementation of the New Partnership for Development" which identifies the principal activities to be carried out and the priorities for their execution.

I will strive to keep the Committee informed on the progress of all activities leading up to the upcoming establishment of CIDI.

I take this opportunity to reiterate to your Excellency the assurances of my highest consideration.

Ambassador Patrick Albert Lewis
Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda
Chairman of the Inter-American Economic and Social Council (CMS)
