As announced in the September newsletter, the Summits of the Americas Secretariat is undertaking a series of consultations and virtual dialogues on the main themes of the Draft Declaration of Commitment of Port of Spain.
The results and recommendations of the fora undertaken to date were incorporated into reports that have been distributed to OAS Member States in order to contribute to the process of negotiation of the Draft Declaration. The reports are also published in the Summits Information Network and have been distributed to participants of face-to-face meetings with civil society.
- Promoting Human Prosperity, from October 1 to 10, 2008 (Final Report)
- Promoting Energy Security, from October 27 to November 6, 2008 (Final Report)
- Promoting Environmental Sustainability, from November 17 to 26, 2008 (Final report is not yet available)
In elaborating the reports, the information was divided into subtopics and classified into the following categories: (i) priorities for social actors in this area, (ii) proposed action strategies, (iii) main comments on the Declaration, and (iv) suggestions on the language and text of the Declaration.
By and large, participants represent non governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations, members of the academic (including professors and students) and the private sector. To date, there are over 460 participants from all OAS Member States, including a prominent participation of the following sub-regions: English-Speaking Caribbean, Andean and Central America.
