Inter-American Cooperation at a Crossroads: Beyond the Fifth Summit of the Americas?

A two day conference on the future of inter-American relations was held on April 15-16, 2009 at the University of West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine Campus, in Trinidad and Tobago, to assess the state of regionalism in the hemisphere 15 years after the First Summit of the Americas took place in Miami, in 1994. The Colloquium “Inter-American Cooperation at a Crossroads” was held within the context of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, and was co-organized by the Institute of International Relations (IIR) of UWI, the Center for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) of Waterloo, Canada, and the Inter-American Studies Center (CEI) of Laval University.

The Colloquium included a roundtable of hemispheric think-tanks, coordinated by the Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL), the objective of which was to analyze and anticipate the state of regional cooperation and development in the hemisphere at the turn of the decade. Highlights of the Colloquium included presentations by the OAS Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Albert Ramdin; Alexandra Bugailiskis, Canada’s Assistant Deputy Minister for Latin America and the Caribbean; and David Malone, President of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Co-organizers anticipate publishing an edited collection of papers emanating from the Colloquium in early 2010.

More information on the results of the Colloquium are available via the websites of the co-organizers:
