Joint Summit Working Group Engages with Member States and Stakeholders in Port of Spain to Support Summit Process

The twelve institutional partners of the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG) provided key support to the Fifth Summit of the Americas through their active participation in the numerous events leading up to and during last month’s historic meeting of the hemisphere’s Heads of State in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. Many of the institutions were called upon to play important roles in providing expertise and facilitating dialogue among civil society, youth, the private sector, and workers, among other stakeholders, at the various fora held in the days prior to the Summit.

In addition, the JSWG presented to these fora, as well as to Member State Delegations, their most recent report on the individual and collective work to implement Summit mandates and commitments entitled, “Achievements of the Summits of the Americas: From Mar del Plata to Port of Spain.” This publication presents the efforts of the JSWG to support the mandates of the Fourth Summit of the Americas held in Mar del Plata, Argentina in November 2005, as well as an overview of strategies and actions to contribute to the commitments made in the framework of the Fifth Summit.

Heads and senior-level officials of the JSWG were present for the proceedings of all sessions of the plenary and also met with high-level officials of OAS Member States during the Summit to begin identifying opportunities for coordinated action on the priority areas identified and discussed by the countries in Port of Spain. The Group will continue this engagement both with governments and as a Group to identify and plan consolidated programs in the areas of Social Protection, Energy and Climate Change, Public Security, and Democratic Governance, among others.
