Message from the Director

David Morris, Summits of the Americas Secretariat (SAS)

 

A little over one year has elapsed since the Fifth Summit, and the Summit of the Americas Secretariat (SAS), in close collaboration with the Government of Colombia as current Chair of the Summits’ process, has made considerable progress in advancing the Summit agenda. Since assuming the chairmanship last September, the Government of Colombia has been leading the Summit process through constructive engagement with the SAS, as well as with the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG), the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG), and other social actors, facilitating a concerted cooperative effort both in follow-up to the Fifth Summit as well as in preparation for the Sixth Summit, to be held in Cartagena in 2012.

First Regular Meeting of 2010 of the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG)

 

SIRGThe SIRG met on April 13 at the OAS headquarters in Washington, DC. In this meeting, the first with Colombia as the Chair of the Summits Process , Member States had the opportunity to receive updated information about the activities that the different stakeholders of the process have undertaken since the conclusion of the Fifth Summit of the Americas.

SISCA: Workshops in Colombia, T&T and El Salvador

Upcoming workshop in Peru

 

SISCAAfter the official launching of the Summits of the Americas Follow-up System (SISCA) in January, 2010, the Summits Secretariat conducted a series of training workshops at the national level in order to provide technical support for the use and implementation of the System. To date, workshops have been held in Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and El Salvador, and the SAS expects to continue providing similar training sessions in several countries of the region, including Peru, host country of the 40th General Assembly of the OAS.

CISC Ensures Maintainance of Link between Ministerials, General Assembly and the Summits

 

CISCThe Committee on Inter-American Summits Management and Civil Society Participation in OAS activities (CISC) has met four times since February, 2010.

The CISC, in keeping with Summits and OAS General Assembly mandates meets regularly to consider the reports from the inter-American ministerial and sectoral meetings, with a view to ensuring that the linkage between the Summits of the Americas and the Ministerials are maintained.

Civil Society Representatives Address Summit Process at OAS Hemispheric Forum

 

Civil SocietyOn May 5 and 6, 2010, civil society representatives of the hemisphere met in Washington, DC to discuss the main themes of the 40th OAS General Assembly, “Peace, Security and Cooperation in the Americas.” The participants presented recommendations to the OAS Member States in a Special Session of the CISC. The representatives also had the opportunity to dialogue with the Summits Secretariat in a participatory session regarding a number of follow-up initiatives in relation to the Summits process.

Launch of the Summits Virtual Community (SVC): Your Voice, Our Future!

SVCAs part of the further development of mechanisms that foster participation by different stakeholders in the Summits of the Americas process, the OAS, through the Summits of the Americas Secretariat (SAS), is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of the Summits Virtual Community (SVC). The launch will be made official at the Ministerial SIRG on June 8th, 2010, in the framework of the Fortieth OAS General Assembly to be held in Lima, Peru.

The Summits of the Americas Secretariat presented this volume which gathers together all the documents issued at the Fifth Summit, the official texts adopted by the inter-American ministerial meetings held between the Fourth and Fifth Summits, and an executive summary of the document From Mar del Plata to Port of Spain: A Report on the Summit of the Americas Process between the Fourth and Fifth Summits (November 2005 – April 2009).

Ministers Meet to Advance Energy and Climate Partnership

 ECPAAt the April 2009 Fifth Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, leaders of the Western Hemisphere underscored that energy and climate change are among the most important issues confronting our future and reaffirmed their commitment to work together towards a clean energy future. Responding to these shared challenges; U.S. President Barack Obama invited all governments in the Western Hemisphere to join in an Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA). ECPA is comprised of initiatives that focus on: energy efficiency, renewable energy, cleaner fossil fuels, energy poverty, and climate change, and infrastructure.

To underscore progress made under ECPA, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu invited all energy ministers of the hemisphere to the Americas Energy and Climate Ministerial at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and at the OAS.

Eighth Meeting of Ministers of Justice or other Ministers or Attorneys General of the Americas (REMJA VIII)

The REMJA process is the premier policy and technical forum at the hemispheric level on matters related to the strengthening of and access to justice and international legal cooperation such as judicial and legal cooperation related to mutual legal assistance in criminal matters; extradition; cybercrime; human trafficking; transnational organized crime; victim and witness protection; prison and penitentiary policy; forensic investigation and family and child rights.
