The 40th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), with the theme “Peace, Security, and Cooperation in the Americas,” took place in Lima, Peru from June 6 to 8, 2010. It was attended by representatives from all active Member States and from a variety of multilateral institutions and civil society organizations. To see the agenda of the General Assembly, view videos of various speakers, access declarations and resolutions adopted, or learn more about this year’s General Assembly, please visit the
40th General Assembly website.
The Summits of the Americas Secretariat (SAS) participated in and contributed to the General Assembly and related events in various ways, including the launch of the Summits Virtual Community (SVC) on June 8, 2010 at the Ministerial Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG), a working lunch with institutional partners from the Joint Summits Working Group (JSWG), a presentation and workshop with Government officials in Lima on the Summits of the Americas Follow-Up System (SISCA), as well as discussions with a variety of social actors on their interest and engagement in the Summits Process. In this special edition of the Summits’ newsletter, you will find more information about each of the aforementioned activities.
In closing I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our readers for your interest in and ongoing commitment to the Summits’ Process. On August 1, 2010, I will begin a new assignment as the OAS’ Representative in Peru, based in Lima. It has been a distinct honor and privilege to have served as Director of the Summits Secretariat for the past several years. I am most grateful to all my present and former colleagues in the Summits’ team for their professionalism, dedication and cooperation during our time together. I will definitely miss the camaraderie, but I can assure everyone that I will continue to follow with genuine interest the Summits’ Process in the years ahead. Best regards to all, David.
