The Fourth Agriculture Ministerial Meeting, “Agriculture and Rural Life in the Americas,” will take place in Antigua, Guatemala, on July 23rd and 24th, hosted by Guatemala’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Nutrition, in conjunction with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture.  This high level meeting of regional Ministers of Agriculture will be held within the framework of the Summits of the Americas process and will address regional agriculture policies and challenges in implementing the Plan AGRO.  It is in the context of this meeting that the Summit Implementation Review Group for Agriculture (SIRG-A) will discuss how each Ministry has been working to implement Summit commitments. The Preparatory Meeting in the Framework of the Fifteenth Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor will take place in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, on July 11-13. During this meeting regional Ministers of Labor will discuss ways to promote regional dialogue and cooperation activities to foster integral and sustainable development in the labor context.  This dialogue will define the themes for discussion at the Conference of Ministers of Labor, which will take place in September. 


On July 11-12, 2007 officials of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the African Union (AU), representatives of the governments of the OAS and AU member states, as well as civil society organizations from the Americas and Africa will gather at OAS headquarters in Washington D.C. to take part in the “Democracy Bridge: Multilateral Regional Efforts for the Promotion and Defense of Democracy in Africa and America”.  This landmark initiative will provide a space for discussion on issues of democracy, human rights, and conflict prevention in order to analyze the challenges for the consolidation of democracy in both the Americas and in Africa.  Participants will use as points of reference the OAS Inter-American Democratic Charter and the recently drafted African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.  On July 10, 2007 officials of the African Union commission and the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States will sign a Memorandum of Understanding at a public ceremony.  For more information please visit the OAS Civil Society website.
