Summits of the Americas: 30 years

The following are the results of the Summit of the Americas over its three decades of history, which are the product of the work of the participating States, with the support of multilateral entities, and of civil society and social actors, in compliance with the mandates adopted at the Summit.

I Summit Miami, United States, 1994
Inter-American Convention against Corruption:

  • Adopted in 1996, it is the first international instrument of its kind to establish measures to prevent, detect, punish, and eradicate corruption in the region. It has served as a basis for the development of national regulatory frameworks and has boosted regional cooperation in the fight against corruption.

Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE), OAS
  • Created in 1999, it promotes cooperation and information exchange among OAS member states to prevent, combat, and eradicate terrorism in the Americas. Facilitates national capacity building through technical assistance and training programs.

Meetings of Ministers of Justices, other Ministers, Prosecutors and Attorney Generals of the Americas (REMJA)
  • Hemispheric, political, and technical forum on Justice and Inter-American Legal Cooperation. It focuses on legal cooperation in criminal, cyber, and justice reform matters.

  • Established in 1997, it is a mechanism that promotes and protects the right to freedom of expression in the Americas, addressing issues such as access to information, protection of journalists, and attacks on the press.

  • A forerunner of the current Summits of the Americas Secretariat, it was established within the framework of the OAS General Secretariat in 1998.

Inter-American Democratic Charter, OAS, 2001
  • Adopted in 2001, it is an instrument that enshrines the commitment of OAS member states to the promotion and defense of representative democracy, establishing principles and mechanisms to address its breakdown or weakening. It has been a fundamental point of reference for OAS intervention in democratic crisis situations, promoting the restoration of constitutional order and respect for human rights.

  • Permanent coordination mechanism of the inter-American system, in order to guarantee the effective and efficient implementation of the mandates adopted at the Summit of the Americas. Provides guidance for the identification and negotiation of issues in the Summits Process, in addition to planning and carrying out projects and initiatives for the implementation of Summit mandates.
