The Summits of the
Americas Secretariat is undertaking a series of consultations and virtual
dialogues on the main themes of the
Draft Declaration of Commitment of Port of Spain.
Based on this Draft,
the signatory countries are currently negotiating the text that will finally be
signed by the Heads of State and Government of the 34 OAS member States during
the Fifth Summit of the Americas (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, April 17-19,
2009).
Thus, by actively
participating in the virtual thematic fora, participants will have an
opportunity to contribute to the highest level political process in our
Hemisphere!

with the private sector
on its role in the Fifth Summit of the Americas

the Americas
Broadening the scope of consultations with the private
sector

In coordination with the OAS Department of Trade and
Tourism, a virtual consultation targeted to business
people in the region will be launched in January, 2009.
The consultation is being undertaken in the framework of
the activities carried out by the Private Sector Forum
in preparation for the Fifth Summit of the Americas.
In this opportunity and until its closing on March 30th,
2009,
private
sector representatives will be invited to offer their
comments on the following topics of the Summit:
Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security, and
Environmental Sustainability.

The Gender perspective in the Draft Declaration of Commitment of
Port of Spain
Consultation of the Inter-American Commission of
Women (CIM)

The Draft Declaration of Commitment of Port of Spain was
discussed in the framework of the recent Third Meeting of
Ministers or of the Highest-Ranking Authorities Responsible for
the Advancement of Women in the Member States - REMIM-III
(November 13, 2008, Santiago, Chile). As a result, the
participants put forward a document recommending that
governments integrate the gender perspective in each one of the
themes of the Draft Declaration.
This document, and the
Draft
Declaration will serve as the basis for a virtual consultation
with civil society to be held in January 2009 and that is being
organized jointly by the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM)
wand the Summits of the Americas Secretariat.

For this new forum open for participation from November 17 to
26, the Summits Secretariat is pleased to have worked in close coordination with the
OAS Department of Sustainable Development.
The subthemes that are currently being discussed include: Climate change,
Natural disasters and Environmental governance.
